イギリスの新約聖書文献学者。『イギリス人のための新約ギリシア語索引』 Englishman's Greek Concordance to the New Testament (1839) や，『旧約ヘブライ語およびカルデア語索引』 Hebrew and Chaldee Concordance to the Old Testament (43) を著わした。ヨーロッパ各地をめぐって写本の収集にも努め，この研究の成果が『新約原典批判序説』 An Introduction to the Textual Criticism of the New Testament (56) ，『古代典籍によるギリシア語新約聖書』 The Greek New Testament Edited from Ancient Authorities，with Their Various Readings in Full，and the Latin Version of Jerome (57～72) である。
