中国は、中国が南シナ海・スプラトリー(南沙)諸島に建設してきた人工島の一つ、ファイアリー・クロス礁の滑走路で、民間機を使ってテスト飛行を行った。これに対してベトナムは、「主権の侵害」として、中国の行為に抗議した。
The Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration rejected China’s claim that the court has no jurisdiction over disputes about territorial sovereignty, and decided to hear territorial claims the Philippines had filed against Beijing that China’s artificial islands in the South China Sea are not entitled to recognition as base points for claiming territorial waters.
オランダ・ハーグの常設仲裁裁判所は、「同裁判所に領土主権問題の管轄権はない」という中国の主張を退け、中国が進める南シナ海の人工島は領海主張の基点にはならない、として中国を訴えたフィリピンの領有権の主張の審理開始を決定した。
